Best remote Radar Detector for WA

Since radar detectors are perfectly legal to use in Western Australia, there are more choices as to which units you can buy.

The main threats in WA are hand-held laser guns, Multanova speed cameras, the new Poliscan laser-based speed cameras, and as of June 2010 - fixed speed / red light cameras.

If you are going to spend the money on a fully installed radar detector, then we recommend the one that gives you warning on all four threats in WA and that is the Bel STi-R PLUS. This model (new for 2010) adds GPS functionality to the system, which means it also alerts you to fixed speed & red light cameras. The Valentine 1 Remote does NOT have GPS - so if you want to be alerted to the fixed speed cameras in WA, you need to partner the V1 Remote with a GPS navigator (such as Tom-tom, Garmin, Navman etc) that has a downloadable database of fixed speed cameras, or alternatively you can partner the V1 Remote with trapster running on a smartphone.

There is another built-in (hidden) radar detector (also referred to as "remote radar detectors" because the antenna is remotely installed in the front of the vehicle) worth mentioning, and that is the Stinger DSI.

The Stinger DSI is, without doubt, the very best built in radar detector when it comes to performance. But if you want to detect the new Poliscan laser based speed cameras, then you need to not only buy the Stinger (at $2,200 AUD) but also the optional laser module, which is another $1100 - being a total of $3,300! Yes it's a great system, but at that price, is it worth it?

So which one is the best unit for WA?

If you have the budget, we recommend the Bel STi-R PLUS

But if you don't want to spend $1800 (plus installation) and you already have a GPS navigator that has a downloadable fixed speed camera database (or have trapster on your iphone) then choose the V1 remote.
