HID Lights, Driving Lights and Xenon H.I.D. Conversion Kits
High-intensity discharge (HID) lamps are a type of electrical lamp which produce light by means of an electric arc between tungsten electrodes housed inside a translucent or transparent fused quartz or fused alumina tube. This tube is filled with both gas and metal salts. The gas facilitates the arc's initial strike. Once the arc is started, it heats and evaporates the metal salts forming a plasma, which greatly increases the intensity of light produced by the arc and reduces its power consumption. High-intensity discharge lamps are a type of arc lamp. Compared with fluorescent and incandescent lamps, HID lamps have higher luminous efficacy since a greater proportion of their radiation is in visible light as opposed to heat. Their overall luminous efficacy is also much higher: they give a greater amount of light output per watt of electricity input. There are two main types of globes; ‘single beam’ and ‘dual beam’. ‘Single beam’ globe vehicles have a separate globe for high and low beams, and come in a variety of socket types (such as H1, H3, H4, H7, 9005, 9006, 9007, D2S, D2R etc) whilst dual beam globes operate both high and low beam from the one socket. If you do not have your car’s instruction booklet, then you can check the following sources for what globe types your car takes:
If your vehicle is not in the list above, then please contact your car dealer as to what globe socket type your vehicle requires.
STEP 2: Decide what colour lights you want Once you know the type of globes your car takes, you now choose the colour you would like your lights to be. ‘Normal’ halogen type globes appear a yellow colour since they ‘burn’ at a lower temperature than HID. HID lights in OEM vehicles such as BMW come from the factory at a colour temperature of 4300k. This is a bright light, but still has a slight yellow hue to it. 4,300k HID lights (usually) output the most amount of light than any other colour.
It is a common misconception, that the higher you go in colour temperature, (8000k, 10000k, 12000k) the brighter your headlights are. This is false. The higher you go in colour temperature the lower the actual amount of light that is put onto the road. So what colour do you choose? 4300k is the OEM standard of factory HID lighting systems, which as mentioned is bright white with a slight yellow hue. 5000k is as close to pure white as you can get. 6000k is the most popular, as it is bright white with a slight blue tinge. Any higher than 6000k and you get a more noticeable blue tinge right up to 12,000k which is a blue / purple light. You can also check the following colour chart here for all the colours: We should also advise that over 4300k (OEM standard) may be illegal in your area. Please check your local road laws prior to purchase. STEP 3: Decide if you want 35watt or 55watt HID lights Most standard halogen light bulbs in your car are 55watts. They produce around 700 – 1000 ‘lumens’ of light onto the road. 'Lumens' is simply the word given to the measurement of light output. Another word sometimes used to describe the amount of light output is "Candlepower". The difference between using "lumens" and "Candlepower" to describe the brightness is that "Candlepower" also takes into account the optics of the light (including reflectors, lens etc) whereas "lumens" is simply a measurement of the light output without any optics. Since optics vary from different light sources, there is no linear conversion from candlepower to lumens (or vice versa). So for the pupose of discusing brightness in HID kits, we only use "lumens". Traditional Halogen globes put out around 700 - 1000 lumens of light. 55watt HID are best suited for spot lights or high beams. People always ask us which one to go for. Our opinion is that 55 watt HID lights are simply too bright for use in normal / low beam headlights. You may find the glare being reflected from wet roads, or street signs back into your eyes is too much with 55 watt on low beam lights. Therefore we always recommend using 35 watt globes on any lights that will be used for low beam, and save the 55 watt HIDs for spotlights or single beam high's. A note of clarification: There are already so many choices when it comes to HID kits and globes, we don't want to over complicate the process, which is why we use a universal globe that can be ran at 35 or 55 watts. Running the globe with a 35 watt ballast will give around 3000 hours of use. Runnning the globe harder using a 55 watt ballast will give you around 2000 hours of use (still around 7 times the lifespan of a halogen globe. STEP 4: Pick which brand of HID you want We offer 4 different HID kits:
Our Supervision standard HID kits are suitable for most (pre 2004) cars and come with a 12 month replacement warranty. The digital ballasts are available in "normal" or "slimline" size (for tight installations), and the globes will last around 3000 hours. These kits are only available in 35 watts. Our Supervision Deluxe HID kits come with higher quality digital ballasts, higher quality "Philips patent license" globes and are able to be used on both a 12 volt and 24 volt electrical system. So you can use our deluxe kits on a 24 volt truck or tractor. They are available in 35 watt or 55watt, have an 18 month replacement warranty, and also include our HID "globe-buy-back" offer. Our Supervision CANBUS HID kits come with CANBUS compliant digital ballasts, and the higher quality "Philips patent license" globes as per our Deluxe kits. They are only available in 12 volt, but are available in 35 or 50 watts. If you have a european car manufactured around 2002 or later (or even the latest model Australian Ford / Holden) then you'll need to confirm with your car service department to check if your car uses CANBUS. If it does, then you'll need to buy this kit (or our Philips kit) - for your HID system to work succesfully. If you have a late model car, but are not sure if it is CANBUS or not, then you'd be safe to choose this kit - as you can successfully use a CANBUS HID Kit on a NON-CANBUS car (just not the other way round) NON CANBUS HID kits installed on CANBUS cars tend to blow the ballasts within months or worse still, could damage the car's electrical system. You may also get the "headlight warning" alert from your car's computer if you install a NON CANBUS HID kit into a CANBUS vehicle - since the computer is looking for a 55 watt load on the headlights, but is only seeing the 35 watt load from the HID ballasts. The Phillips HID kits are simply the best HID kit on the market in our opinion. Phillips are recognised world-wide for producing the highest quality globes, and the globes in these kits are manufactured in German. These kits come with a 24 months replacement warranty, and are also suitable for use in CANBUS vehicles (they work in both CANBUS and NON CANBUS electrical systems). The age old “you get what you pay for” is especially true with HID kits. We don’t bother selling the cheap and nasty kits you may find on eBay for under $100 for obvious reasons. We have been a registered Australian business since 2002 and we intend to stick around for the long term. If you read through many car forums you will hear how most of these cheap eBay kits fail in under 12 months leaving their owner with no option but to replace the lighting system with a better quality set. Don't waste your money on buying a cheap and nasty HID kit the first time round - only having to replace it a few months down the track. Our kits have a 12 - 24 months full replacement warranty which means if there is ever a problem, we replace the defective part for you. Summary of the 4 different kits we offer:
